Ziplining is available along the Layou, Dominica’s longest river. Visiting national sites cost $5 each or $12 for a week-long pass. One excursion operator listed a trip to Morne Diablotin plus the Boiling Lake for $175 per person.

It is a great spot for relaxation and exploration, with a variety of activities to choose from. Cruise visitors can explore the bustling streets of the town, take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, and enjoy the beautiful beaches of this Caribbean paradise. Still, one of the better options is the black sand Mero Beach in the village of Mero.

Explora Journeys reveals itineraries for ships EXPLORA I and EXPLORA II through April 2026
The worst time to go is any month from late fall until early winter. Dominica is a rainforest island because it receives a great deal of rain throughout the year. Most cruise lines dock at the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth, while some others may dock at Woodbridge Bay or the Cabrits Cruise Ship Berth.

The lake is spectacular, but the hike there is an arduous 8-hour return slog, so it’s only for the fit and healthy. It’s well worth the effort to witness the continually boiling waters of this spectacle. To help you plan your trip to Roseau and to Dominica, here is our ultimate guide to visiting the city and the island. From exploring museums to hiking volcanic peaks, every day there’s a chance to experience something new on Dominica. The beach itself is very rocky, with patches of black sand, but it’s the snorkelling opportunities that people come here for, not the sunbathing. So-called because of the tiny bubbles that rise to the surface from the volcanic floor, Champagne is one of the most popular snorkelling spots in Dominica.
Inorder to find out more about the cruise ship itineraries such as ports, dates, and arrival/departuretimes just follow the ship’s link. For bigger adrenaline-junkies (although don’t worry, you don’t need experience and there’s always a guide present.), head to the Canyon Experience at Extreme Dominica. During this four and a half hour trip, you’ll hike, rappel and simply just jump down rainforest canyons and rivers. This is a tour which I missed out on last time I was in Dominica but would love the chance to do when I go again. Incredibly, this spot is an area where there is an opening in the Earth’s crust.
The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Roseau, Dominica. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link. Roseau is laid out in an easy to navigate grid system with many of the tourist facilities clustered around the cruise ship dock; the tourist office and Old Market are close by. The heart of downtown Roseau is just yards away from the cruise port.
Dominica is known to be one of the most beautiful of the Caribbean Islands. But if you want some fresh air, a peaceful walk in green surroundings, and the chance to see some wonderful tropical trees up close and personal, this is the place for you. The gardens are just a ten to fifteen minute walk from the cruise pier, at the foot of Morne Bruce hill, and they’re free to visit. Spot the baobab tree which was felled by a hurricane in the 70s, crushing a yellow school bus in the process (luckily there was nobody inside). The gardens are used as much by the locals as by curious tourists, and once in a while you might spot a cricket match taking place here.

It is covered in a dry forest and separated from the mainland by marshland, which attracts doves, herons and various migrating birds. There are hiking trails and an English garrison named Fort Shirley. The park was established in 1986 and occupies 531 hectares (1313 acres). But my favourite place for eating and drinking near Dominica cruise port is undoubtedly the Fort Young Hotel. Roseau is very easy to explore on foot, and my personal opinion is that you’d be missing out if you didn’t spend an hour or so exploring the colourful architecture of this pretty city’s streets.
Dominica Cruise Port: Tips, Attractions and Weather
The National Park is named after its highest mountain, Morne Trois Pitons, meaning mountain of three peaks. Features within the part include the Valley of Desolation, a region of boiling mud ponds and small geysers; the Boiling Lake, Titou Gorge, and Emerald Pool. The best time to go to Dominica is April during the dry season (which isn’t that dry) for a combination of low risk of rain and warmer temperatures.
Fed by clear mountain waters from a 40 foot waterfall, these waters appear emerald green because of the leafy, filtered sunlight. Located in Morne Trois Piton National Park, the pool is a favorite for swimmers and is the 2nd most visited tourist spot on the island. It’s a short 10 minute well-marked walk from the Visitor’s Center to the falls. Dominica is unlike almost any other island that mainstream cruise lines visit.
The island features no chain hotels or big-box mega-stores, though there are a Pizza Hut and KFC in Roseau, the capital city. The eastern side of the island faces out over the warm, calm waters of the Caribbean Sea while the western side faces out onto the stormier waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Roseau, the capital and largest city of Dominica, is found on the sheltered, southeastern side of Dominica. A devastating hurricane destroyed much of the gardens in the 1970s, and a large tree even fell on a school bus.
Dominica is famous for its natural, volcanic scenery, and the best place to experience this is in the magnificent Trois Pitons National Park. Named for the mountain peak, Morne Trois Pitons, which presides over the island, this is a spectacular area of beauty. The Roseau Botanic Gardens are one of the most loved sights on the island. Established in the colonial days, these gardens are a source of life in the city, but also a reminder of the troubles the weather can cause here. And for something completely different, and involving absolutely zero water at all, this cooking class with local chef Daria is resoundingly popular. Learn how to cook a Dominican meal from scratch under Daria’s guidance, in the stunning setting of her mountain home.

Dominica is about 380 miles south to southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the eastern Caribbean Sea. It lies about midway between the islands of Antigua to the north and St. Lucia to the south. It’s a common stop on eastern Caribbean cruises, especially during the dry season. It's located in town, just steps away from shops, restaurants and transportation. The Port of Woodbridge Bay, less frequently used, is about a mile north of the city. The dry season and particularly the period over Christmas and New Year, are the most popular and busiest times to visit, as the weather is great and many travelers from the north are looking for winter sun.
Roseau is said to offer the best fruit and vegetable market in the Caribbean. A few excursions that take visitors only to Mero Beach usually cost less than $50. Otherwise, some island tours include Mero Beach along with other stops such as Salton Waterfalls, the sulphur springs at Wotten Waven and the baths at Ti Kwen Glo Cho.
My absolute number one favourite excursion from Dominica cruise port, was to Titou Gorge. (Such a true favourite that I visited more than once.) The incredible gorge is high up in the mountains, and involves a steep drive uphill, and then a freezing cold swim to a waterfall at the end of the gorge. This breathtaking location was used as a filming location for Pirates of the Caribbean, so you can also live all your Jack Sparrow dreams here. If you would like a taxi to take you on an island tour, it’s advised to book it in advance. Taxi prices are regulated by the government and a 4-5 hour tour usually accommodates up to 4 passengers. While tipping isn’t the norm in Dominica, a little extra for the driver, especially if they’ve taken you around the island, is always appreciated.
